Heroquest

A collaboration between MB Games and Games workshop, hero quest is a fantasy adventure game  for 2 to 5 players.

The original Heroquest advert.

I first got this game in the early 90's, it was Christmas and I had bee wanting to play it since I saw the TV adds that had been running since early November, not even the spotty little oiks in the ad shouting "fire of wrath!" or "I'll use my broadsword!" in their best stage school voices put me off.

I picked up two copies of this last year on a boot sale and after sorting out the broken bits and missing cards I managed to assemble a full set.

The board is a full colour map of a dungeon with walls, corridors and rooms.
You don't use the whole board when you play and you get the layout of each level from the quest book provided, as well as the maps this book also provides back story.

The quest book is in colour, the rule book is in black and white

In the box are the game cards, these are divided into spells, treasure, equipment and monster cards.

There are also game tiles for traps, secret doors and other hazards, doors that stand up and show where you can and cant enter rooms and lot's of furniture including  bookcases, desks and my favourite- a rack complete with skulls.

The best thing about this game for me though are the game pieces, each one was created by citadel miniatures are very detailed and look fantastic. The really give the game great depth and add allot to the over all experience.

I sat down with four friends to play this as it had been along time since I last looked at it.
It was surprisingly fun to play if a little simplistic compared to some games from GW.
The dice work very well to deal with combat and the simple shields vs skulls system makes the games combat very quick and easy.
After a couple of rounds everyone was enjoying themselves and even the guys who were not into the whole role playing games or D&D had a good time.

Summing up, heroquest is a great little game and has allot of quality to it, Its a nice introduction to more complex games such as Warhammer 40K and space hulk.
